“I want you two to go home for a few hours. Get some rest, and then come back ready to figure this out.” Captain Williams had beckoned us into his office to go over what we knew so far. What he really wanted to know was how the cases were related, if they were. Not having a concrete answer to his questions was never my favorite thing.

“I wish we had more to tell you. Right now, this is all we have. We will need to wait until we can speak to him to know if the crimes are related. In my gut, I don’t think they are. I think the first body was genuine. But I think the other two were staged to match the first after it was in the news. We didn’t release everything to the press, which is why there are some inconsistencies.”

He regarded my statement in his stoic manner. Captain Marcus Williams did not have an expressive face. His emotions and thoughts were always a mystery to me until he started talking. “That might be possible. But I’d hard pressed to believe that two other murderers saw the same news broadcast and had the same thought, especially when they all happened so quickly after another.”

“Stranger things have happened,” said Zelina.

“Well, I need you two to stop them from happening before anyone else gets any ideas. Best way to do that is to solve these murders and show any would-be copycats that their plans won’t work.”

“We will, sir.”

“But first, get some sleep. You two look like you haven’t slept in days.”

I glanced down at my watch. It wasn’t too late. I wasn’t too sleepy, either. I felt wired and not on espresso. The FBI hadn’t returned from wherever they had gone, and Logan hadn’t called me back. My heart’s steady rhythm picked up. I hoped the agents not being there was a good sign. They were out searching for Dani, as they should be. As should we all. I grabbed my keys and headed for the door.

Logan was not at my house when I got home. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. He still wasn’t returning my calls, and the longer I went without hearing from him, the more it worried me. He could have been at the hotel, opting to stay there in a more comfortable bed. Or he could have been with Isaac, which could have been a good or bad thing.

I wasn’t sure Isaac would have talked him out of doing anything he shouldn’t have been doing. He wasn’t exactly the level-headed one. Or maybe the brothers were with the FBI, and that was why they weren’t back yet. They found a lead or something.

Instead of crawling into bed, I lay on the sofa with an icepack on my ankle. I was only home for a quick nap and something to eat. I was too tired to eat, so I slept first.

The nap was quick. Less than an hour. And I didn’t feel rested when I woke up.
